2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, Klipsun Vineyard

Sourced exclusively from Klipsun Vineyard in the highly-regarded Red Mountain AVA, the grapes were hand-picked and blended with 8% Merlot to lend softness. A powerful, intense Cabernet offering aromas of ripe red plum, piquant spices, cocoa and vanilla. A palate of bright red and black fruits trails into a warm, persistent finish. From one of America's outstanding vineyards, this wine will be enjoyable for many years to come.

2005 Pinot Gris

100% hand-picked Pinot Gris shows a brilliant, medium straw color opening to a complex and full aroma and palate; vanillin, freshly cracked hazelnut , honeysuckle blossom, ripe citrus and green apple contrast with a refined sur lies character. Finished dry, intense ripe fruit balances harmoniously with generous acidity and crispness. A subtle hint of new French oak character adds a grace note - a perfect match with fresh seafood, while refreshing on its own.

2005 Viognier

Rich, green gold color. Orange peel and peach aromas waft from the glass, accented with spicy toasty notes. Charming flavors of honey, orange and peach, supported by a ripe, soft structure and complex notes from barrel fermentation in French oaks.

Sourced from two vineyards on the Wahluke Slope, a warm region of sandy soils overlooking the beautiful Columbia River in Central Washington. Hand-selected under ideal harvest weather conditions at moderate crop loads. Bottled in March, 2006 after fermentation and aging in new French barrels, and finished in tank to preserve fruit characters and freshness. This is a forward, expressive style Viognier meant to be drunk young.

2005 Riesling

100 % Riesling, harvested from an older, warmer site and a more Northern cool climate site. 2005 gave us normal yields and great harvest weather. Brilliant, light straw color. Graceful, balanced Riesling fermented at cool temperatures to maximize varietal aromas and flavors. Shows abundant ripe apple and floral notes, with undercurrents of mineral. Follows our traditional style of a light sweetness with a clean, crisp finish. While it can be held for up to 2 years to gain bottle character, this is a white wine made to be enjoyed young. A very versatile wine for a variety of occasions.

2003 Merlot, Columbia Valley

Grapes:

Blended from several vineyards within the Columbia Valley. 2003 was a very warm vintage of dry, sun-drenched days. Yields were near average. As with all our wines, the grapes were hand-picked; harvest weather was ideal. A Merlot base enhanced with substantial portions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sensory:

We crafted this wine to drink earlier than our vineyard-designated releases, seeking softer tannins and very broad, full mid-palate flavors. Cabernet Franc adds softness and complexity, and a light note of violets. The aroma is of ripe black fruits surrounded by complex oak tones of spice and vanilla. There’s great balance on the palate, with a natural harmony between fruit and structure.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in February 2005 after aging in our cellars for 15 months in a mix of American and European barrels. Will benefit from near to medium-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavor development over 6-18 months.

2004 Merlot, Columbia Valley

Grapes:

Blended from several vineyards within the Columbia Valley. 2004 was another very warm vintage of dry, sun-filled days. Yields were below average. The grapes were hand-picked under ideal harvest weather. A Merlot base enhanced with Cabernet Franc: 91% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc.

Sensory:

We crafted this wine to drink earlier than our vineyard-designated releases, seeking softer tannins and very broad, full flavors. Cabernet Franc adds softness and complexity, and a light note of violets. The aroma is of ripe red plum and black raspberry fruits surrounded by sweet oak tones of spice and vanilla. There’s immediate accessiblity on the palate, with a natural harmony between fruit and gentle structure.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in March 2006 after aging in our cellars for 16 months in a mix of American and European barrels. Will benefit from near to medium-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavor development over 6-18 months.

2002 Merlot, Seven Hills Vineyard

Grapes:

100% Merlot, sourced from the esteemed old blocks of Seven Hills Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. The 2002 growing season gave us a moderately warm ripening period and rain-free harvest weather. As with all our wines, the grapes were hand-picked.

Sensory:

An elegant, balanced Merlot exhibiting a broad array of flavors. Hints of licorice and vanilla accent ripe black fruit flavors and aromas. Medium bodied, with gentle tannins and generous depth and length.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in April, 2004 after aging in our cellars for 18 months in mostly French, plus American and Russian barrels. Will benefit from medium-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavor development over 6-24 months. An excellent example of the qualities that have made Northwest Merlot so enjoyable.

2002 Merlot, Columbia Valley, Klipsun Vineyard

100 % Merlot, sourced exclusively from the famed Klipsun Vineyard of Columbia Valley’s Red Mountain AVA. As with all our wines, the grapes were hand-picked; harvest weather was perfect.

Sensory:

A luscious, intense Merlot offering generous aromas of ripe red berry and red cherry and spices. By mouth there is great depth and length of fruit, surrounded by vanilla and chocolate notes. A forward vintage of softness, huge fruit flavor and approachability.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in April 2004 after aging in our cellars for 18 months in a mix of French and European barrels. Will benefit from medium-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavor development over 12-24 months. Enjoy this full-bodied Merlot from one of the best vineyards in the State for years to come.

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley

The blend is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller portions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot.

A medium-bodied red of deep color. By nose and mouth it shows black and red fruits, sweet spices, vanillin and red plum overtones. The diverse vineyard sites show in a pleasing range of flavors and accessible structure. Polished gentle tannins and a slight brightness make this an inviting mealtime choice.

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, Seven Hills Vineyard

92 Point, Wine Spectator, Fall 2006

Cabernet Sauvignon 89%, Cabernet Franc 7%, Merlot 4%. Complex, layered Cabernet showing the depth of flavor that old vines offer. Rich red plum and blackberry are complemented by cocoa and licorice notes with hints of vanilla and pepper. Moderate acidity, an approachable texture, and a pleasing, lengthy warm finish support the sensory profile. A highly rated, very collectable bottling from one of the most well-regarded Northwest vineyards.

Sourced from diverse sites throughout the Columbia Valley. 2003 was a vintage of great warmth and an accelerated maturation period. As with all our wines, the grapes were hand-picked; harvest weather was perfect. The blend is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller portions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Sensory:

A full-bodied red of deep color. By nose and mouth it shows black and red fruits, sweet spices, vanillin and red plum overtones. The diverse vineyard sites show in a broad range of flavors and a sound structure with depth and length. Balanced tannins and a slight brightness make this an inviting mealtime choice. Cabernet Franc and Merlot add a softness and perfume to the core Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in July, 2005 after aging in our cellars for 22 months in a mix of European and American barrels. Will benefit from medium-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavor development over 12-24 months. An excellent example of the qualities that have made Northwest Cabernet enjoyable, ageable, and intriguing.

2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, Klipsun Vineyard, Columbia Valley

Grapes:

Sourced exclusively from the famed Klipsun Vineyard of the Red Mountain AVA. As with all our wines, grapes were hand-picked; harvest weather was perfect and yields near average. Blended with 9% Merlot to lend softness.

Sensory:

A powerful, intense Cabernet offering aromas of ripe red plum, clove, coffee, and vanilla. By mouth there is great depth and length of fruit, laid on substantial tannins, surrounded by spice, vanilla and mocha notes. A stellar vintage of restrained acidity, huge flavor and a very ageable structure.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in July 2004, after cellaring in primarily French barrels. Will benefit from medium to long term aging, gaining additional integration and flavor development over three to six years. From one of America’s outstanding vineyards, this wine will be enjoyable for many years to come.

2004 Syrah, Walla Walla Valley

Grapes:

Essentially a single-vineyard, 100% Syrah from Dwelley Vineyard, a mid-altitude, south-facing slope on very deep silt-loam soils. 2004 was amongst the warmest of vintages, coming close to 1998 and 2003. As with all our wines, the grapes were hand-picked; harvest weather was dry and hot.

Sensory:

The aroma is of pine, gamey characters and black cherry. Smoky Syrah notes dominate the palate, with ripe black fruits, pepper, and vanilla accents. There’s a gentle balance, with softness and polish encouraging early drinking.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in April 2006 after aging in our cellars for 18 months in primarily French oak, about 30% new. Will benefit from medium-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavour development over 12-18 months.

2004 Tempranillo

A very rare bottling of a native Spanish varietal, Tempranillo, which has only recently been grown in Washington State. The vines are located on a south-facing gravelly slope, near Mattawa. The fruit was hand-picked under ideal weather conditions.

A medium bodied, ripe, accessible style. Shows cherry fruit, with exotic hints of smoke, savory herb and rose-petal notes. Vanillin and subtle spice add complexity. Sweet fruit by mouth, with a rich finish, with mild dry tannins.

Bottled in March 2006 after aging at our cellars for 16 months in primarily American barrels. Will benefit from near to medium-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavor development over 6-18 months.

2004 Ciel du Cheval Vintage Red Wine, Red Mountain

A hand- picked blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot from the renowned Ciel du Cheval. Harvested under ideal conditions, from a moderately warm vintage.

The most evenly blended of our releases to date, with Cabernet, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc contributing about equally to the blend, while including a higher percentage of Verdot. Shows soft red plu, pie cherry, rhubarb, and pungent, sweet spices in the nose. The palate is of red fruit over moderate structure, a little tight, but with subdued tannins. 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, 13% Petit Verdot.

Bottled in April 2006, after 18 months cellared in the finest French barrels. At its release its structure indicates favorable medium-term aging qualities. This wine will open up over the next six to twelve months. Cellar for up to 4-6 years from the vintage.

2002 Pentad, Walla Walla Valley, Vintage Red Wine

We proudly release the second vintage of PENTAD Vintage Red Wine, a Walla Walla Valley blend of five varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere, Petit Verdot and Malbec. This wine follows the very successful 2001 release, which established a new level in our expression of Walla Walla Valley winemaking, and is the essence of many years of craftsmanship. Our intention with Pentad is change through time, shaping expansive flavor, complexity, and creation of an evolving sensory experience. Every care has been taken in the production of Pentad, to provide a transcendent wine that is both enjoyable and collectible.

Winemaker notes:

`…shows intricate finesse and broad subtlety, with a captivating array of aromas. I find raspberry, red plum, passion fruit, mulberry and blueberry. The spice component reveals fennel, white pepper, licorice, and a waft of allspice. Diverse hints of candied violet, mocha, caramel, and beet root add interest. A structure of pungency and refined elegance provides a food- friendly platform underneath it all.

2005 Malbec, Walla Walla Valley

100 % Malbec, harevsted from Windrow, Minnick, and McClellan Estate Vineyards, three hillside sites in the appellation under ideal conditions. Deep, purple-black color. Assertive scent of passion fruit and blueberry, with floral and spice notes. Medium weight body, with moderate tannin. Berry finish, slightly drying.

Malbec has a history in Bordelais and Cahors wines stretching back centuries. Its aging characteristics when grown in the Walla Walla Valley are evolving at this point, but the wine shows qualities that would indicate at least three to four years of enjoyable cellar life. Aged primarily in fine Hungarian oaks. Our first release since the 2003 vintage, and of very limited availability.

2005 Petit Verdot, McClellan Estate Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley

This release is extremely limited - only 75 cases were made, and the Barrique Society (our wine club} members were the first to receive it. This 100% Petit Verdot was the talk of our holiday open house as a spectacular barrel sample. Rarely available as a single-variety bottling, here is your opportunity to purchase the first release from McClellan Estate Vineyard.

2004 Viognier, Columbia Valley

Grapes:

2004 Riesling, Columbia Valley

Grapes:

100 % Riesling, harvested from an older, warmer site and a more Northern cool climate site, under good conditions. 2004 gave us slightly higher than normal yields.

Sensory:

Brilliant, light straw color. Graceful, balanced Riesling with an off-dry finish and moderate alcohol. Fermented at cool temperatures to maximize varietal aromas and flavors. Shows abundant ripe apple and floral notes, with undercurrents of mineral. Follows our traditional style of a light sweetness with a clean, crisp finish.

Cellar Notes:

While it can be held for up to 2 years to gain bottle character, this is a white wine made to be enjoyed young. A very versatile wine for a variety of occasions.

2004 Pinot Gris, Oregon

Grapes:

100% hand-picked Pinot Gris, from the Umpqua appellation of Oregon. The cool, marine-influenced microclimate of the Umpqua creates a blend of ripe flavors and balanced acidity. Ideal harvest conditions from an older, low yield site.

Sensory:

Brilliant, medium straw color. The aroma and palate are complex and full. Vanilla, freshly cracked hazelnut, honeysuckle blossom, ripe citrus, pear and melon aromas and flavors contrast with a refined sur lies character. Finished dry, there is an apparent sweetness from the intense fruitiness; promoting a harmony with the crispness present. The smallest hint of new French oak character adds a grace note to the palate and aroma profile.

Cellar Notes:

Apt to age well for up to 2 years, maturing in the next 6 to 9 months. A perfect match with seafoods of all types, and refreshing on its own as well.

2003 Tempranillo, Walla Walla Valley

Grapes:

This is one of the rarer bottlings of a native Spanish varietal, Tempranillo, which has only just begun to be grown in Washington State. The vines are located on a south-facing terrace, in the mid-Walla Walla Valley. The fruit was hand-picked under ideal weather conditions.

Sensory:

A ripe, accessible style. Shows cherry fruit, with exotic savory hints of smoke and rose-petal notes. Vanillin and subtle spice add complexity. Sweet fruit by mouth, with a rich finish.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in February 2005 after aging in our cellars for 16 months in primarily American barrels. Will benefit from near to medium-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavor development over 6-12 months.

2003 Syrah, Walla Walla Valley

Grapes:

Truly a Valley-wide blend, with grapes from several different microclimates. Seven Hills, Morrison, Dwelley, and Double River Ranch vineyards all went into this very warm 2003 vintage. As with all our wines, the grapes were hand-picked; harvest weather was dry and hot.

Sensory:

The aroma is of pine, gamey characters and black cherry. Smoky Syrah notes dominate the palate, with ripe red fruits, orange peel, pepper and vanilla accents. There’s great balance, with brightness and youth setting the stage for beautiful evolution in the bottle.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in July 2005 after aging in our cellars for 23 months in primarily French oak, about 30% new. Will benefit from medium to longer-term cellaring, gaining additional integration and flavour development over 12-36 months.

2003 Planing Mill Red, Table Wine

Grapes:

Blended from multiple vineyards within the Columbia Valley. 2003 was a very warm vintage of dry, sun-drenched days. Yields were near average. As with all our wines, the grapes were hand-picked; harvest weather was perfect. A blend of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from well-drained soils.

Sensory:

We crafted this wine to drink earlier than our vineyard-designated releases, seeking softer tannins and very broad, full mid-palate flavors. Cabernet Franc adds softness and complexity, and a light violet note. Syrah adds body, structure, and black cherry and game flavors. Merlot fills out the middle palate. The ripe fruit characters are surrounded by oak tones of baking spice and vanilla. There’s great balance, with a natural harmony between fruit and structure.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in April, 2005 after aging in our cellars for 18 months in a mix of American and European barrels. This is an accessible, enjoyable wine styled to be drunk young.

The Planing Mill Red is named in honor of the woodworking artisans who labored in our building for nearly a century before prior to its renovation as our winery.

2003 Malbec, Walla Walla Valley

Grapes:

100 % Malbec, harvested from Windrow and Minnick Vineyards, two hillside sites in the appellation, under ideal conditions.

Sensory:

Deep, purple-black color. Assertive scent of passion fruit and blueberry, with floral and spice notes. Medium weight body, with moderate tannin. Berry finish, slightly drying.

Cellar Notes:

Malbec has a history of use in Bordelais wines stretching back centuries. Its aging characteristics when grown in the Walla Walla Valley are evolving at this point, but the wine shows qualities that would indicate at least two or three years of enjoyable cellar life. Our first release since the 2001 vintage, and of very limited availability.

2003 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard, Red Mountain, Vintage Red Wine

Grapes:

A hand-picked blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot from the renowned Ciel du Cheval Vineyard. Harvested under ideal conditions, during one of the warmest vintages on record.

Sensory:

The blend is primarily Merlot for softness and round red fruit flavors, with substantial portions of Cabernet Sauvignon for power and structure, and Cabernet Franc lending aromatics. A small amount of Petit Verdot is incorporated for its savory character and deep color. At release the wine has a pleasing softness and integration supporting a complex range of aroma and flavor, from slight herbal tones such as fennel, all the way to ripe blackcurrants.

Cellar Notes:

Bottled in April 2005, after 18 months cellared in the finest French barrels. Shows every indication of favorable aging qualities. Cellar for up to 6-8 years from the vintage.

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Seven Hills Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley

Grapes:

Hand-Selected, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, predominantly from Seven Hills Vineyard’s `Old Block`, blended with a portion sourced from Windrow Vineyard. 2001 was a moderately warm vintage which gave us well-ripened fruit and ideal picking conditions.

Sensory:

Deep purple-red color with black hints. Expansive aroma of dark berries, and exotic notes from aging exclusively in the finest French barrels. This Cab has a huge, expansive middle palate with layers of flavor, and a lengthy, silky finish. The wine shows its youth, with a bit of dustiness in the nose and restraint around the core palate flavors, boding well for a long life in the cellar.

Cellar Notes:

Based on our history of Cabernet releases from this micro-climate, one can look forward to its pleasing cellar evolution for at least a decade. This is only our fifth Reserve Cabernet in 15 years, and is truly a very limited collectible bottling.
